Sister Acts Sewing Center Launch - Uganda!
It’s a bus station, third world…dust and dirt surround the masses as they come and go in the high heat of Gulu, Uganda. The smell of food cooking in pots on the dusty ground mixes with the noise of those trying to scratch out a living selling their wares.
Above the perimeter of shops is another layer of dwellings…it might sound dreary but among the noise, and the smell of desperation, up the stairwell made of uneven bricks and clay is a room filled with HOPE – you see that is where the Sister Acts Sewing Center is, in the middle of the city center.
It’s where you can find a determined, hardworking, talented group of seamstresses…Juliet, Susan, Lucy, Harriett, and Florence. In a sea of despair and overwhelming daily challenges these mamas were willing to hold on to the hand that Sister Acts provided and take the next step UP out of hunger, disease, poverty, and hopelessness.
At first glance, the sewing center is a bit unimpressive but then you see the beautiful old Singer treadle machines, the handmade stools they sit at all day, a simple book with hand drawn dress and school uniform designs, a grass mat on the floor with little ones at play, and the small door to the balcony that brings a much-needed breeze – its when you recognize that something good is happening here. Then, you hear it, the sound of “HOPE Happening Here”…the ladies’ lightning fast feet driving the pace of the project in hand and their voices rising in unison as they praise the one who brings peace, healing and HOPE. It is a sound that brought tears to my eyes the first and every time I hear it.
As I looked around and saw the meager tools they have to work with, and understood the obstacles they overcome each day just to get here, the heavy weight they carry of being the sole support to their growing families, and the unfulfilled dreams hold deep in their hearts…I couldn’t help but be humbled by the story their voices tell, the testimony of how grateful they are for the opportunity to have a place to work, create, and produce something they can take pride in, and ultimately feed their families by.
Our Sister Acts Sewing center is a dream long in coming but today we can tell you that the dream is unfolding and the women are taking ownership of its future…they can’t do it alone just yet, it may be some years before they are able to be totally self-sufficient but they are on their way.
I’ve heard their stories, laughed and cried with them, held their sick little ones, danced and sang hymns of praise to our same Father…I’m sold-out for these women!
Would you join me as we work shoulder to shoulder to keep the doors open and the projects flowing?? Would you make it possible for these women to break to bonds of oppression?
They need more tools to be competitive in the marketplace…a baby lock (surger), cutting tools, flooring, proper lighting, and funds for fabric to help make their climb just a little less steep…if you feel the tug at your heart to help, click on the green donate button in the upper right corner today, (write “sewing” in the note area) and we promise you that every dime will make a difference, Thank you!
